Mosser's Complete Game Shutout, Merkle's RBI Hit Leads Trojans Over Bethlehem Catholic

Posted by John Rabasco on Apr 23 2013 at 05:00PM PDT in 2019 Varsity

Gabe Mosser pitched a complete game shutout today, outdueling Bethlehem Catholic's pitcher for Parkland's 1-0 win.  Mosser was dominant the entire game and retired the first 11 batters he faced.  Mosser allowed three scattered hits, walked none, and collected eight strikeouts.

It was a similar story for Bethlehem Catholic's hurler who retired the first 10 Parkland batters he faced before allowing a walk in the 4th inning.  Although Parkland threatened to score in the 4th inning after putting a second runner on base with another walk, those base runners were left stranded.  Justin Afflerbach (1-for-2) got Parkland's first hit of the game in the 5th inning but was unable to score.  Alex Flynn led off the 6th inning with a hit-by-pitch and after the next two batters recorded outs, Chris Rabasco (1-for-3) singled to left field to put runners on first and second with two out.  Zack Merkle (1-for-3, RBI) then stepped to the plate and came through with a clutch, game-winning RBI single that was hit hard to right-centerfield allowing Flynn to score from second base.  One run was all Mosser needed today even though Bethlehem Catholic threatened in the 7th inning.  A lead off single followed by a sacrifice bunt and balk put a runner on third base with one out, but Mosser ended the threat by getting the next two batters out, including the final out on a strikeout.

Prior to today's game, Parkland's eight senior players each honored a Parkland School District teacher with a "Shirt Off My Back" award.
