McAndrew & Giovenco Combine to No-Hit Central Catholic

Posted by John Rabasco on Apr 26 2015 at 05:00PM PDT in 2019 Varsity

Pitchers Evan McAndrew and Ryan Giovenco combined to no-hit Central Catholic today as the Parkland Trojans dominated in all facets of the game for the 13-0 win in the 5-inning game.  This is the Parkland pitching staff's second no-hitter and seventh shutout of the season as the Trojans improve their season record to 14-1.  Starting pitcher McAndrew threw four no-hit innings, striking out three with one hit batter.  McAndrew (3-3, 2B) also contributed with his bat, collecting three base hits, as twelve different Parkland players had at least one base hit in the Trojan 17-hit attack.  Giovenco, making his varsity debut, pitched the final inning of the game striking out four batters and walking one in his one inning of work.  Giovenco had four strikeouts in the one inning due to one Central batter reaching base on a dropped third strike.

After a scoreless 1st inning that saw the Trojans strand two base runners who had reached base with one out in the inning, the Trojans batted around the order in the top of the 2nd inning and scored six runs.  Cullan Wadsworth (1-4, R) had an infield single to lead off the inning and McAndrew followed with a single.  With runners on first and third base, the Trojans executed a double steal to take a 1-0 lead.  Kyle Friebolin (1-2, HBP, walk, R, RBI) was hit by a pitch and Jeff Strisovsky (1-2, BB, R, RBI) then singled to bring home courtesy runner EJ Brandt (1-1, 2R, RBI).  Friebolin scored the third run of the inning on an RBI single by Justin Afflerbach (2-3, 2R, 3 RBI).   Chris Rabasco (2-3, 2B, R, 2 RBI) then hit a 2-RBI double to increase the Parkland lead to 5-0.  Rabasco then scored on a Rhett Jacoby (0-1, BB, sac fly, RBI) sacrifice fly.

Parkland added four runs in the 3rd inning and three runs in the 4th inning.  McAndrew, Andrew Roth (1-2, R) and Friebolin hit consecutive singles.  Friebolin's hit scored courtesy runner Brandt.  Afflerbach then hit a one-out 2-RBI single to increase Parkland's lead to 9-0.  Tyler Bruno (2-3, RBI) then singled home Afflerbach to finish out the 3rd inning.  In the 4th, McAndrew got things going again with a lead off double down the right field line.  Isaac Neal (1-2, RBI) singled home McAndrew and a Central fielding error on a ground ball off the bat of Connor Higgins plated Friebolin who had reached base earlier in the inning with a walk.

With the 13-0 lead, Giovenco took the hill in the bottom of the 5th inning and struck out four to finish the no-hitter as he worked out of a bases loaded jam after three batters reached base on a dropped third strike, an error, and a walk.   Harsha Bollu (1-2, 2R) and Alec Bartholomew (1-1) both added singles to the Trojan offensive effort.
