Underdog Trojans Defeat Bangor in District XI Semi-Final 2-1

Posted by Kevin Roth on May 29 2016 at 05:00PM PDT in 2019 Varsity

The three time defending District XI Champion Parkland Trojans defeated the previously unbeaten Bangor team on a balmy Memorial Day afternoon.  A nice ceremony honoring our Military with Navy Veteran Charlie Shaw throwing out the first pitch preceded the victory.  The Trojans in winning today’s game punched their ticket to play in their fourth straight District XI Title Game.

On the mound for today’s game was Mike Jenkins (7 inn, 3H, 5K, 1ER), the Parkland ace who looked sharp in earning the complete game victory.  In the field the Trojans played excellent defense in support of the Jenkins’ three hitter.

It did not take long for the Trojans to score their first run and it was done in dramatic fashion by Austin Mueller (2-3, HR, R, RBI) in the second inning.  Mueller after hitting a long foul ball which easily cleared the right field fence stood poised at the plate awaiting the next pitch.  That pitch was again sent skyward to right field but this time it wasn’t foul.  It sailed over the fence tying the game at 1-1 but, it also seemed to shift the momentum in the Trojans favor as he circled the bases.

Kyle Friebolin (0-2, HBP) led off the fourth and was hit by a pitch by the Bangor starter.  CK Kinsley (0-0, R) ran for Friebolin and he advanced to second on a ground out by Matt Mellinger.    Isaac Neal (0-2, BB) and Ethan Imler (0-2, BB) both walked, loading the bases.  That brought up Jenkins (1-3, RBI) who singled to right scoring Kinsley.

The Trojans had runners on base in the first inning with Tyler Bruno (0-2, BB), the third and seventh with Andrew Roth (1-3, BB), and the sixth as Mueller picked up his second hit of the day.  While they were unfortunately left stranded, it did not matter on this day as Jenkins seemed to get stronger in the later innings. He retired the last ten batters he faced, including a strike out to end the game.
