Mellinger Plates Two as the Trojans Down Northampton

Posted by Kevin Roth on May 05 2016 at 05:00PM PDT in 2019 Varsity

On a cool afternoon the Trojans bats were hot as they banged out 9 hits in a 5-2 a win against Northampton.

In the 2nd inning Kyle Friebolin (1-2, RBI, HBP, Sac) singled and was replaced by John Amato (0-0, R) as a courtesy runner.  Austin Mueller (3-4) and Isaac Neal (2-4) singled to load the bases.  Ryan Giovenco (0-4, RBI) helped his own cause with a ground out to short to score Amato.

The 3rd inning was lead off by Andrew Roth (1-4, 2R, ROE) who reached on an error by the third baseman.  Tyler Bruno (0-3, 2 ROE, BB, R) reached as well as Northampton had its second miscue of the inning.  Friebolin was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Matt Mellinger (1-3, Sac, 2RBI) hit a deep sacrifice fly which after tagging, Roth scored standing from third.

The 5th inning saw Roth again get on base this time with a hit.  Cullan Wadsworth (1-4, R) bunted for single.  That brought up Bruno who laid down a great bunt of his own.  The throw was wide at first as Northampton tried to throw out the speedy Bruno.  He was safe and the errant throw allowed Roth to score from second.  It also moved Wadsworth to third and Bruno to second.  Friebolin then followed with a sacrifice fly to score Wadsworth, and Mellinger smacked a single to drive in his second run of the game plating Bruno.

The Trojan hurlers looked good as Giovenco (6 inn, 5H, 6K, 2ER) scattered 5 hits over six inning of work to pick up the victory.  Braeden Duff earned the save with a 1-2-3 7th inning as no ball left the infield.
