Hazleton Shuts Down JV Trojan Offense

Posted by John Rabasco on Apr 22 2014 at 05:00PM PDT in 2019 Varsity
The JV Trojans' bats were quieted all game by the Hazleton Cougars pitching.   Parkland collected only 1 base hit, but did earn 9 walks in a 5-3 loss.   Starting pitcher Braeden Duff (5 IP, 8 H, 3R, 2 ER, 5 SO, BB) worked five effective innings and was able to keep the Trojans close with excellent pitching.

The game was scoreless through 2 1/2 innings of play when in the bottom of the third the Cougars scored 2 runs.  Parkland answered in the 5th inning when Harsha Bollu (0-1, 2BB, 2R) and John Amato (0-2, 2BB, 1R) both walked with one out.  Two wild pitches allowed Bollu to score and put the Trojans on the board 2-1.

Duff shut down the Cougars in the 5th inning.   In the bottom of the sixth inning Hazleton got a lead off hit and Parkland brought in relief pitcher Bollu (1 IP, 2 R (both unearned), 2 H, 1 SO).  Hazleton would go on to score three runs in the inning with a couple more hits and a Trojan fielding error to increase their lead to 5-1.  Parkland did not go without a fight.   In the top of the 7th, Hazleton pitching walked the based loaded with base-on-balls to Bollu, Amato, and Andrew Roth (0-1, 3 BB).   The Hazleton no-hit bid was ended when Parkland got its first hit of the game, an RBI single to right field by EJ Brandt (1-2, 1RBI) to cut the Cougar lead to 5-2.   With the bases still loaded, another walk forced in a run, but the rally ended on a deep fly ball to left field to end the game and the 5-3 loss.
