JV Lose to Northampton on Opening Day
Starting pitcher Joe Algard pitched well through four innings with only one ball truly hit hard to the outfield and giving up some slow dribblers for hits that helped the opposing team get a couple more runs. Joe was effective enough to earn the win but fielding miscues and well placed slow grounders helped the Kids from Northampton. Joe and Ty Tremba, making his first Parkland appearance, threw strikes throughout the game. Catcher Aaron Atiyeh made all the necessary plays behind the plate to keep the Northampton runners glued to their bases. All the home team needed was some clutch hits and the final score would have been different. In the 3rd, a potential rally happened after leadoff hitter, Taiki Horiguchi walked to get the inning started. After another walk to Bryce Ratliff, those two were ready with two outs when Owen Lehr hit a ball to left field that was juggled, allowing the speedy Horiguchi to score the first run. A hard hit grounder by AJ Carpenter was scooped up by the shortstop to nip the lanky batter at first base ending the potential big inning. Down 3 to 1 in the 4th, the bats started to get as cold as the weather. Even with the effective Tremba on the mound holding the visiting team to no runs, lack of offense ended the teams first game with a disappointing loss. Other than the walks, a clutch two out single by Dean Scott and a 2nd double by hitting star, Bryce Ratliff, the bats were silent. Not all was lost on the opening game as the middle infield made some really smooth 6 to 4 to 3 double plays with Ratliff to Miskanic to Carpenter getting the key outs on inning ending double plays. The pitching also was very solid and with improved defense and some key hits, these L’s can quickly turn into W’s! One game down but the team will be more than ready as they play at cross town rival, Allentown Central Catholic on Thursday
