JV Trojans shutout against Northampton

Posted by Rich Kinsley at May 6, 2018 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Northampton appeared to have the Trojan JV Team’s number this year as they played well in their 2nd game against Parkland this year. In a game where Josh Miiller pitched well, the Trojans were not able to get many hits and more importantly, no real clutch hits. A 2 to 0 lead looked like it would disappear in the 6th when the Trojans had the bases loaded but unfortunate hits to the wrong places created a put out a home followed quickly by a double play to end the inning. Parkland played well but the Northampton lefty pitcher was hitting all the spots and was difficult to hit. Parker Swartz had 3 nice hits including a beautiful bunt down the 3rd base line. Lesser beat out the throw on a bunt in the 6th, Ratliff hit a fly single to left, Giovenco flared a single to right field and Nick Ernst bounced a single past the 3rd baseman. Most of these hits were scattered during the game, so no rallies could be found. Although the game was close for many innings, some runs in the top of the 7th gave Northampton team 6 runs, and without Parkland being able to put a lot of hits together, other than the 6th, the JV Squad was shut out 6 to 0. With one game left, Parkland is looking to end their season on a positive note in a game against Whitehall.

Trojans fall at The Sandlot to Daniel Boone

Posted by Rich Kinsley at May 4, 2018 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Collin Duff took the mound on Saturday at the Sandlot and pitched effectively throwing to battery mate Ethan Russell. The pair worked around traffic and held the Blazer lineup scoreless through 4 innings, the problem on this day was that with the exception of a CK Kinsley single to lead off the game in the bottom of the first; Duff's counterpart for the Blazers held the Trojans hitless after that until the bottom of the seventh inning. Duff battled all day to keep the Trojans within striking distance while holding Daniel Boone in check even though they had several chances with traffic on the bases. Duff finished 6 innings while striking out 5. The problem on this sunny afternoon at the The Sandlot was that after the CK Kinsley first inning hit the Trojans offense went missing as they were retired in order multiple times and the lone baserunner prior to the bottom of the 7th rally was Adam Mellinger after a walk. The Blazers were able to sneak runs across in the 5th and then again in the 7th after AJ Palumbo came on in relief of Duff with a runner on 1st and no outs. The Trojans rally in the bottom of the 7th fell short after Cullan Wadsworth walked, Adam Mellnger singled and Will Algard then singled home Wadsworth for the lone Trojan run of the afternoon, but that was all the Trojans would get as Mellinger and Algard were left on base as the Trojans lost to Daniel Boone 2-1.  imageimage
In a season when some non-league teams opted out of playing the Trojan JV Squad, the Blazers from Daniel Boone wanted to play as they made the trek up Rt 222 to get to the Parkland JV Field. Both teams were sporting good records going into the contest. It is nice to play baseball when the weather is nice and the Blazers came to bat first as they were challenged early against Pitcher Drew Sorrentino. Drew is starting to come into his own and once again, he pitched masterfully with 9 strikeouts in only 5 innings. He gave up no runs and pitched mostly strikes on this Saturday afternoon tilt. Other than a few singles with no one on base, Drew was constantly baffling the batters with his mix of pitches. It looked like it might be a closer game after 2 innings when the JV 9 left some runs on base. In fact, there were 9 total runners left on base in the contest, which helped extend the game to avoid and early inning win. In the first, Chris Lessel, who is consistently getting on base got hit by a pitch. A perfectly executed hit and run with Parker Swartz striking the ball to right field and then a slicing single to right by Nikhil Patel gave the Trojan squad a quick lead. However that is all they could manage in the first. The 2nd inning saw similar factors with Owen Lehr working a walk (2 walks, 1 hit by pitch and 2 runs scored), Jack Giovenco getting hit in the back (1 hit by pitch, 1 walk and 1 R Scored) and a Bryce Ratliff (2 for 3) line single to centerfield made it bases loaded. The Blazers of Daniel Boone were not used to the unique design of the JV Backstop so a passed ball scored Owen Lehr, but then the rally was thwarted. The 3rd inning was the big inning as Josh Miiller walked, TJ Khela stayed extra hot with another hit to centerfield, Owen Lehr walked and Jack Giovenco got an rbi bases loaded walk. Another single by Ratliff and a reach base on error by Lessel provided 4 runs for the home team to take a comfortable 6 to 0 lead. At this point, Sorrentino continued to “cruise” on the mound. The Trojan 9 got an insurance run in the 4th when Miiller and Khela, who each reached base often, got on with walks and with some wild pitches, the Trojans were able to get runs. Joe Algard, who can play anywhere, came into pitch and with an efficient 6 pitches, retired the side. Later in the game, just back from injury, Austin Scherff hit a screamer single to left field. The top of the 7th got a little interesting as the Blazers were able to explore their way back in the game. They were not able to gain folk hero status with the comeback attempt as Junel Rodriquez was able to silence the Blazers with a strikeout. The 7 to 3 win kept the JV Trojan Team as hot as the weather and no one was wishing the season would be over within the week.

The game that made many wander whether it was meant to be played or not, finally occured in Hazelton on Friday, after a reschedule, a road trip to Hazelton that resulted in no game being played due to field conditions and then to top it off on the way to the game the bus blew a tire and the team had to wait for a new bus to get them to the game in the mountains. With the game finally underway CK Kinsley led off with a single and Joe Webber came in as a courtesy runner, Jared Kuharchuck singled and Wadsworth walked to load the bases, Adam Mellinger then scored Webber with a Sac Fly to CF and a 1-0 Trojan lead. Wadsworth then took 2nd on a wild pitch and Will Algard scored Kuharchuck grounding into a fielders choice with Wadsworth advancing to third. Hani Kitabwalla then walked and Matt Ervolina plated Wadsworth with a Sac Fly and a 3-0 Trojan lead after the top of the 1st. The Trojans then wen in order in the 2nd and 3rd inning.

The Trojans drove the lead to 4-0 in the Top of the 4th after Matt Ervolina singled and advanced to 3rd on a Alex Oliver single and then scored on a Ethan Russell SacFly to LF. From the mound CK Kinsley and battery mate Ethan Russell & the Trojans kept the Cougars off the board until the 4th inning when they were able to plate 2 runs and cut the Trojan lead to 4-2. On the day Kinsley was just what the Trojans Staff needed going deep in the game pitching 6 and 1/3 innings striking out 3 until Alex Oliver relieved him in the 7th and got the final 2 outs of the game.

The Trojans put a couple more on the board in the Top of the 6th after Will Algard ROE, Hani Kitabwalla singled and Matt Ervolina walked to load the bases. Ethan Russell then plated Algard with a SacFly to LF to make it 5-2 then CK Kinsley singled driving in Hani Kitabwalla pushing the lead to 4 at 6-2. The Cougars got their final run of the day in the bottom of the 6th to make it 6-3. Will Algard singled in the Top of the 7th but was LOB. After getting the first out in the bottom of the 7th CK Kinsley was relieved by Alex Oliver with a man on first. After a single Alex Oliver induced a pop up to the infield and the struck out the batter for the third out securing the Trojan Victory

On a day at Sammy Balliet Stadium that feature 80 + temperatures and a torrential downpour resulting in a rain delay the Trojans Offense bowed it's back and picked up the pitching staff in a 13-9 comeback effort. After spotting the ACC Vikings a 7-0 lead after 2 innings, Phil Schoch came on in relief and got not only the victory but the game under control, as the defense helped him to lock the game down so the Trojan Offense could go to work, claiming the lead in the 5th inning to defeat Allentown Central Catholic 13-9 on Thursday. The game was tied at nine with the Trojans batting in the top of the fifth when Dylan Miller doubled on a 0-1 count, scoring two runs. The Trojan Offense was boosted on this day by Adam Mellinger who went 4-for-4 at the plate. Mellinger doubled in the third, singled in the fourth, and singled in the sixth. Phillip Schoch pitched well for the Trojans and kept ACC in check while going two and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out four. Koby Staivecki threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen. Staivecki recorded the last six outs to earn the save for the Trojans, and was the beneficiary of a momentum killing CK Kinsley to Ervolina to Will Algard DPlay at one point that thwarted any comeback thoughts the ACC Vikings may have had. A.J. Palumbo got the start for the Trojans. Mellinger went 3-for-4 (1 BB, 2 runs, 2 RBI) at the plate to lead the Trojans in hits; as the offense logged 12 hits and 6 walks on the day as the Trojan Offense refused to lose to the Vikings. Other contributors on offense to the come from behind victory were: Christian Kinsley (1-4, 2 runs, 1 BB,1 RBI) Cullan Wadsworth (1-2, 1 BB, 2HBP, 1 run), Dylan Miller (2-5, 2 Runs, 2 RBI) Will Algard (1-3, 2 runs, 1 BB, 2 RBI) Jeremy Piatkiewicz (1-3, 1 run, 1BB 3 RBI), George Jenkins (1-2, 1BB), Matt Ervolina (1-4, 1 run, 1 RBI).
