Parkland JV hosted Allentown Central Catholic under the lights. In the busiest stretch of games of the season for the young squad, the later start time helped create the largest crowd of the season for the anticipated showdown with the Vikings of Central Catholic. The weather could not have been any different than the first game played between the teams when there was a bitter cold and snow prior to the game. In this contest, with the mid 80 degree temperatures, the music playing and the smiles on the boys faces, everyone expected a fun night. Just 3 weeks ago, Parkland won on a no hitter. Today was going to be different. After 2 innings of play, the Trojan JV boys were down unexpectedly 5 to 0. Parkland hit into some tough luck in the first with a double play and a liner to centerfield that was sandwiched by a Nikhil Patel single to left. In the 2nd, down 5 to 0, a 2 out rally concluded with Luke Dauberman lining a single to centerfield scoring a run but a great thrown by the centerfielder was able to get the final out in the inning. Owen Lehr came in and pitched effectively for 2 plus innings giving up no earned runs. At this point, the Parkland bats went to work over the next few innings. Down 7 to 2, the comeback was on the way. Key hits by lanky first baseman, TJ Khela and Bryce Ratliff (2 for 3) and Parker Swartz produced runs. A long double by Nick Ernst drove in 2 more runs and some great situational hitting by right fielder, Jake Donmoyer helped keep the rally going. Owen Lehr dramatically took ball 4 on his one at bat and sped past first to get to 2nd on a walk where the ball went back to the screen. Often running for the pitcher or catcher, Chris Lessel used his base running savvy to score 3 runs to help the Trojan 9. Joe Algard was masterful behind the plate making all the key plays but had some game changing plays by throwing out a runner trying to steal 2nd base in the 3rd but more importantly catching an unexpectant Viking runner at 3rd base by gunning him out in the 5th. Ultimately that throw kept the inning from getting worse in this game that seemed to go deep into the night but ended after 5 innings due to time constraints. After throwing just one pitch before Algard’s pickoff throw, Junel Rodriquez ultimately would be the winning pitcher as the Trojans were in for a dramatic 5th and final inning. In this back and forth game with some hits but many miscues by many teams, showed Parkland tying the game at 7 and then taking an 11 to 7 comfortable lead going into the 5th, only to lose that lead in the top of the 5th. When the officials declared the 5th inning to be the final inning, a 1 out rally was needed if Parkland wanted to get the victory. Owen Lehr sharply grounded to short and reached on an error. TJ Khela walked and then another walk to Nick Ernst loaded the bases. With a noise ordinance not allowing music past 9:30pm, you could almost hear “whatever it takes” by Imagine Dragons as Lessel and Khela made sure the game didn’t end in a loss or tie as they seized the opportunity to score on back to back passed balls. Khela’s instinct helped conclude a long affair as the Trojan 9 pulled out a 13 to 12 victory. Although the game did not always have flawless execution to be considered a classic, the game was certainly interesting to watch and the late inning dramatics and coaching strategy provided a nice win and the late night drive home a little sweeter!

After a season of more postponements than games played, the Trojan JV Team was anxiously awaiting their home game against Pocono Mountain East. On a beautiful, sunny day with the sun shining, the smell of ballpark fare down at the Coke Wagon and a happy vibe in the air, all were hopeful for a great baseball game. Little did everyone know that Sophomore Pitcher, Drew Sorrentino would pitch the game of his life. After striking out the side in the top of the first inning, his velocity on the fastball and bite on the curve would indicate that he was going to difficult to hit against. Great pitching combined with some less than ideal fielding by the Cardinals of Pocono Mountain contributed to a solid victory for Coach Moyer’s squad. A RBI single in the first by DH Josh Miiller (1 for 2 with 2 rbi’s and 2 runs scored) put the team ahead for good. His line shot to centerfield scored Chris Lessel (1 for 4 and 3 runs scored) and Parker Swartz (2 for 2 with 2 singles and a walk). Drew was “on” for the game and he wouldn’t need much offense to win this game. In fact, his dominating performance included 11 strikeouts in just 5 innings pitched. The few batters that made contact hit mostly soft pop ups near home plate. Other than a walk and hit by pitch, the only batter to reach base for Pocono Mountain East was in the 5th inning, when the catcher tried to bunt to break up the no hitter. A throw slightly off target enabled the PM Catcher to reach base.

With the official scorer quickly indicating “e” for error, the no hitter was a strong possibility. During the 2nd through 5th innings, the Parkland hitters made plenty of contact, but were fortunate that the defense wasn’t as crisp as our pitching, so extra runners consistently got on base. Joe Algard (1 for 2) seemed to be on base in every inning. From his 2nd inning single to his ability to take pitches for a walk, or get hit by pitch or even get on with an error, he was able to make things happen on the base paths. TJ Khela had 2 rbi’s by having productive at bats in the 3rd and 5th innings. His teammate, Owen Lehr (1 for 2) had a nice day at bat by getting hit by a pitch in the first and hitting a line drive single to right in the 4th inning. Nikhil Patel had his typical day by get an rbi single and getting on base with a walk and Luke Dauberman made one of the few necessary fielding plays for the Trojans and also managed to get on base a couple of times and score a run. Behind every great pitching performance by a pitcher is the work of the catcher. In this game, Jack Giovenco caught a great game and should be proud of catching a no hitter. Jack struck the ball hard in the 5th inning deep to left field to help knock in a run and to start to put the game out of reach. Joe Algard’s walk off Hit by Pitch turned out to be the final play of the game. With 1 week left in this season, the Trojans are hitting their stride behind some great pitching and timely hitting.

The Trojan JV team has been scoring a lot of runs and having some great pitching for the 2nd half of the year. They had the 5th game of at least 10 runs in their last 6 games with a 10 to 0 shutout against Nazareth. In those 5 games, they have only given up 3 runs. Today was Josh Miiller’s turn to make an impact as he pitched a complete game 5 inning shutout while only giving up 2 singles. With Josh’s control and good defense behind him, Parkland was able to take command by getting 13 hits. Chris Lessel started the game off with a beautiful bunt for a single in the first and Josh Miiller drove him home with a line drive single later in the inning. Josh had 2 hits and 2 rbi’s to complement his effective pitching. In the 2nd inning, singles by TJ Khela and Jack Giovenco followed by a sacrifice bunt by Owen Lehr brought to the plate Chris Lessel, who then knocked in a run with one of his 3 hits. It was a team effort that helped produce this win during another perfect weather day at Parkland Stadium. Parker Swartz had his typical game with a single and 2 walks, Drew Sorrentino came through in the clutch with a single to right center knocking in 2 and Khela and Giovenco got singles later in the contest. Bryce Ratliff flared a single into right field in the 5th in the inning that the Trojans scored 4 runs. Owen Lehr grounded to short to bring in the 10th and final run. Josh Miiller was really effective and when one of your top pitchers is giving up minimal base runners, the confidence is high for the team as they know a few runs should win the game. With 10 runs from the total team effort, the up and coming team is hoping to finish their last 5 games strong. image
The Trojans managed through a push by Nazareth in the first inning in which the Trojans yielded three runs, but the Trojan Varsity Squad still won 10-5 on Wednesday. The Trojans pulled away for good with seven runs in the fourth inning. In the fourth Dylan Miller singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run, Matthew Ervolina singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run, Christian Kinsley singled on a 3-1 count, scoring two runs, and an error scored one run for the Trojans. Adam Smith was the winning pitcher for  surrendering four runs on six hits over five innings, and striking out three. Koby Staivecki and Kinsley entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief. The Trojans totaled 15 hits. Joe Webber, Kinsley, Jeremy Piatkiewicz, and Adam Mellinger each had multiple hits on the day. Kinsley and Webber each collected three hits to lead Parkland Trojans Varsity. Also lending hits to the offense on the day were Will Algard, Koby Staivecki and Jared Juharchuck. imageimageimage
Collin Duff got the start on the hill in the Mountains on Tuesday and went four scoreless innings from the hill, allowing zero runs on four hits, striking out five and walking none as he has continues to display a real feel for his pitches with each appearance for the Trojans. The Trojans did weather a small push by East Stroudsburg North in the fifth inning during which ESN plated three runs, but it wasn't nearly enough and the Trojans still managed to get out of the Poconos with the 18-3 win in 5 innings over ESN on Tuesday. The Trojans got on the board in the first inning as they took an early 5-0 lead. The Trojans also tallied nine runs in the fifth inning. Parkland's big bats were led by Austin Imler, Alex Oliver, Jared Kucharczuk, Ethan Russell, AJ Palumbo and Gabe Stay, who all drove in runs. Adam Mellinger threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen. Will Algard paced the offense onthis day going 2-for-3 with 3 rbi's at the plate to lead the Trojans offensively in hits. Jeremy Piatkiewicz (1-2, Double) with an rbi and CK Kinsley 1-3 with an rbi, Matt Ervolina (1-2), Koby Staivecki (1-2)added to the offensive output on the day also. The Trojans were also very disciplined at the plate on this day as they walked 12 times, Jeremy Piatkiewicz, Cullan Wadsworth, Adam Mellinger, Ethan Russell, Hani Kitabwalla, Dylan Miller, Joseph Webber, Phillip Schoch, Gabe Stay, J Kuharchuck & AJ Palumbo (2) all worked the free pass. imageimage
